Why roots are their own service
New growth is a different job from the rest of your hair, and treating it the same way is how people end up with banding — those darker or brighter stripes that appear where old color and new color overlap.
Hair at the scalp is warmer, thanks to body heat, and completely untouched by previous color. Hair further down has been processed before and is more porous, so it grabs pigment faster. Applying one formula to both, all the way down, every time is exactly how color builds up and goes flat and muddy at the ends. Keeping the touch up to the regrowth avoids all of that.
Timing matters more than you'd think
Somewhere between four and eight weeks is the sweet spot for most people. Come in too early and there's barely enough regrowth to work with. Leave it much past two inches and blending the new growth into existing color gets considerably harder — body heat makes the color nearest the scalp develop faster, so a long stretch of regrowth can end up lighter at the top than it is an inch down.
Gray coverage
Gray hair is stubborn on purpose — it's coarser, often more resistant, and it doesn't accept pigment the way pigmented hair does. Getting full, even coverage is about formulation and processing time rather than just picking a darker shade.
If you're covering a lot of gray and finding the four-week cycle exhausting, it's worth asking about blending instead. Softening grays rather than fully covering them means regrowth arrives as a gradual shift instead of a hard line, and many people find they can stretch to eight or ten weeks comfortably.
Common questions
Can you match color I had done somewhere else?
Usually yes. It helps enormously if you know what was used — a receipt, a formula written on your record, even the name of the shade. Without it I'll match by eye, which works well but is worth mentioning at booking so there's time to get it right.
My ends look faded too. Can we fix those?
That's what a gloss is for — a quick refresh pulled through the lengths at the end of the appointment. It revives the tone and adds shine without piling more permanent color onto already-processed hair. Ask when you book and time gets set aside.
Is this the same as all-over color?
No. This is regrowth only. All-over color takes a shade root to end and is what you want if you're changing color rather than maintaining it.
I have highlights, not all-over color. What do I book?
Then you want highlights rather than a root touch up — foils have to be re-placed rather than filled in at the scalp. Message me if you're unsure which you've got; a photo in daylight usually settles it.
