Why foils still win for brightness
A foil wraps the section it's lightening. That does two things: it keeps the product off the hair next to it, so the line between light and dark stays crisp, and it holds heat, so the section lifts further than it would in the open air.
That's why foils can take you lighter, and closer to the scalp, than freehand painting. The trade-off is honest: because the lightness starts at the root, you'll see regrowth sooner. Highlights are the choice for maximum brightness; balayage is the choice for minimum upkeep.
Full foil
The whole head, front to back, underneath included. The biggest change and the brightest result — what you want if you're going properly light.
Partial foil
The top and sides — the parts people actually see. Most of the visual impact for noticeably less time and cost. The most popular option by far.
Face-framing
A handful of foils around the face only. Brightens your complexion and photographs beautifully, with barely any commitment.
Choosing how bright to go
The most common regret isn't the color — it's the contrast. Highlights that sit three or four shades above your base read as sun-lightened and grow out gracefully. Highlights eight shades above your base look striking on day one and demand a salon visit every six weeks forever.
Neither is wrong. But it's worth deciding deliberately rather than discovering it in two months, so we'll talk about how often you realistically want to be back in the chair before I mix anything.
Common questions
How long do highlights last?
The lightness is permanent — it grows out rather than washing out. Most people book again at six to ten weeks depending on how much contrast there is against their natural root.
Can I get highlights and balayage together?
Yes, and it's a genuinely good combination — foils through the top for brightness where it shows, balayage through the lengths for softness. Mention it when you book so enough time is set aside.
Will my highlights look orange?
Warmth appearing as lightener works through your natural pigment is normal and expected — toning at the end is what neutralizes it. If warmth creeps back weeks later, a gloss refreshes the tone without lightening again.
Do I need a toner every time?
Effectively yes — toner is what turns "lifted" into the shade you asked for. It fades over several weeks, which is why hair drifts warmer between appointments.
