If your child hates haircuts

It's almost never about the hair. It's the cape, the buzzing sound, the stranger with scissors near their ears, the chair that's too high and moves. Once you know that, most of it is solvable.

So we go at their pace. They can sit on your lap. They can hold the comb, or watch something on your phone, or keep their hood on until the last possible second. If we need to stop halfway and start again in five minutes, we stop. Nobody gets a better haircut for being rushed through it in tears.

What I see most

First haircuts

A genuinely big moment. Bring a bag for the first curl — I'll save it for you, and I'll never rush this one.

Back-to-school refreshes

August and early September get busy. Book a little ahead if you want a convenient slot rather than whatever's left.

Growing out a bad one

Home haircuts with kitchen scissors happen to everyone. We can shape it into something intentional rather than starting from scratch.

Long hair, tangles and all

Detangling gently takes time and I'd rather take it than pull. Nobody learns to like haircuts by having their head yanked.

Three things that genuinely help

  1. 1. Book around their good hours. A tired or hungry child at 4pm is a different child than at 10am.
  2. 2. Tell them beforehand, honestly and without build-up. Surprises go badly; so does a week of anxious warnings.
  3. 3. Stay relaxed yourself. Kids read the adult in the room faster than anything you say to them.

Common questions

What ages do you cut?

Toddlers through to teenagers. Older kids who'd rather have a grown-up haircut and a proper consultation about what they want can book a regular haircut instead.

What if we have to give up partway?

It happens, and it's genuinely fine. We do what we can, tidy it so it doesn't look half-finished, and try again another day. A bad first experience is much more expensive than a short one.

Can siblings book together?

Yes — book a slot each, back to back. It often goes better than expected, because the second one has just watched the first one survive it.

My child has sensory sensitivities.

Tell me when you book and we'll plan around it — no cape, no clippers, no spray bottle, whatever they need. Knowing in advance means I can set up before you arrive rather than adjusting in front of them.
